10 Things to Do When Words Are Hard As A Highly Sensitive Mom

Ever find yourself so overwhelmed in the daily grind of motherhood that even speaking feels like too much?

I’ve been there. As a highly sensitive mom and therapist, I know those moments when the words just won’t come (or are too much and too loud) and my thoughts and emotions are 😵‍💫 swirling too fast.

Fuck, when words are hard, it feels so good just to sit, decompress and scroll for a bit.

But … if your screen time isn’t actually helping your overwhelm, I have a solution.

FYI - 📱Scrolling isn’t the problem; it’s the solution and your brain’s way of hitting the escape button. And you know what? That's okay. We all need to escape sometimes. 🎧

But if you’re craving more than just decompressing with your phone, keep reading. There are other ways to create those sacred moments for yourself so that you can calm the mom chaos 🤯.

For almost a decade, I've seen how effective creative coping tools are with my highly sensitive mom clients.

And I get it - finding time for 🎨 creativity as a busy mom can seem impossible (especially when words are hard and time is slipping away with scrolling), but these sacred moments with creativity can make a huge difference (and your rebellious inner teenager will be jump for joy when you bust out the gel pens).

When you take care of yourself as a highly sensitive mom, you are also taking care of your kids. Their emotional state is directly linked to yours (don’t be mad at the messenger).

I’ve been there - in the middle of something hard, and even harder to explain and my kids start to come unraveled too, soon everyone is in tears and exhausted.

It’s in the chaotic corners of my kitchen that my emotions exit through my body, safely contained in the pages of my art journal. The calm starts to wash over me and my spirit comes alive again. Each page in my art journal is a commitment to myself and my family to keep going, keep doing the hard thing and to stay true to what my soul needs while also rebelling against what productivity demands of me.

My art journal is the sanctuary where the bittersweet language of my motherhood overwhelm is expressed freely.

To the highly sensitive moms with an urge to find a creative outlet, I offer this wisdom: the spirit of your creativity matters. Whether you have an art journal exploding with embellishment OR printer paper and broken crayons, your creativity is waiting to be expressed and discovered.

Here’s what I’ve learned as a counsellor for moms - there’s more than one way to escape the overwhelm.

10 ways to escape the overwhelm when words are hard as a highly sensitive mom:

1️⃣ Draw Your Feelings: Grab a pen and paper and just scribble. Let your hand move without thinking. Release all that pent-up energy onto the page.

2️⃣ Dance It Out: Put on your favourite song and let your body do the talking.

3️⃣ Intentional Playlist: Curate a playlist that mirrors your emotions. Let the music take you on a journey, allowing each song to resonate with your heart.

4️⃣ Nature Art: Gather leaves, twigs, and rocks to create a nature mandala. Let the outdoors inspire you.

5️⃣ Collage Your Emotions: Cut out images and words from magazines that speak to you and create a visual diary.

6️⃣ Uncensored Writing: Let your thoughts flow onto the paper without any filters. Write everything that comes to mind, no matter how raw or messy.

7️⃣ Walking Meditation: Take a slow walk, focusing on each step and breath.

8️⃣ Look at Art: Visit a gallery or browse art online. Let the colours, shapes, and expressions speak to you.

9️⃣ Word Play: Write poetry in a haiku. Capture your feelings in three lines of five, seven, and five syllables.

🔟 Just add Water: Take a warm bath or a shower, and let the water wash away your stress.

Which one speaks to you? Give it a try and let the creativity calm the chaos (and tag me in your IG stories).
